Furnace caused poisoning death
12/03/01
- State police have determined that a malfunctioning furnace
caused the carbon monoxide poisoning death of a Clearfield
Township man last month, authorities said.
Gilbert
Riott, 84, of 554 S. Clearfield Road was found dead in his home
Nov. 24.
Butler
County Deputy Coroner William Young Jr. confirmed police
suspicions, ruling that Riott died from carbon monoxide
poisoning.
State
Police spokeswoman Cheryl Michalski said police determined a
problem with the home’s furnace caused the buildup of carbon
monoxide in the home.
Cracks
in a gas furnace’s heat exchanger could cause carbon monoxide
to leak into the heating ducts, he said.
